YUFE Connects: Professor Dariusz Brzostek’s Research Fellowship at the University of Eastern Finland
From 27 April to 3 May 2026, Professor Dariusz Brzostek from Nicolaus Copernicus University undertook a research fellowship at the University of Eastern Finland in Joensuu at the invitation of Dr Elina Hytönen-Ng from the Karelian Institute.
During his stay, Professor Brzostek carried out the research project Towards an Anthropology of Modernization: Technology, Art, Communication, which explores the modernising potential of technological change, particularly within the fields of audio and audiovisual media. The project focuses on documentary practices, private multimedia archives, amateur artistic activities related to sound and image, and social activism, examining their role in shaping new relationships between humans and their environment through acoustic ecology, cultural identity, archival practices, and anthropological methods such as field recording.
As part of the fellowship, Professor Brzostek established cooperation with researchers affiliated with the Karelian Institute at the University of Eastern Finland, as well as with emerging research networks developed within YUFE. The visit also included archival research, field recordings, and participant observation conducted in cultural and artistic institutions in the Joensuu region, including the Eliel Museum, Joensuu Main Library, and Koli National Park.
The research stay contributed to strengthening international academic cooperation and developing interdisciplinary perspectives at the intersection of anthropology, media studies, sound studies, and environmental humanities.
