YUFE Connects: Dr Magdalena Kowalska’s Study Visit to the University of Eastern Finland
From 19 to 25 January 2026, Dr Magdalena Kowalska from the Institute of Literary Studies, Faculty of Humanities at Nicolaus Copernicus University, completed a study visit to the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) as part of the NAWA YUFE Connects project.
Hosted by Professor Kati Launis (Professor of Finnish Literature, School of Humanities, Philosophical Faculty), Dr Kowalska expanded her research on nineteenth-century women's writing, contemporary approaches to its study, and the European network of scholars working in this field.
During her stay, she delivered a lecture entitled "Femininity and Natural Environment in Nineteenth-century Polish Women Writing" at the Research Community BOMOCULT (Borders, Mobilities and Cultural Encounters) seminar, led by Professor Jopi Nyman (Professor of English, School of Humanities, Philosophical Faculty). The seminar provided an opportunity for international discussions on the social position of women writers, the reception of their works, and current developments in literary research.
The programme also included meetings with representatives of the International Programmes Office and the University Library. Thanks to Katinka Käyhkö, responsible for YUFE cooperation at UEF, Dr Kowalska gained valuable insight into the implementation of the YUFE Alliance from the perspective of the Finnish partner, including effective approaches to the delivery of work packages.
Further meetings with Dr Marja Kuittinen, Information Management Specialist, focused on the outcomes of the YUFE Pilot, which supports the identification of research collaboration opportunities across YUFE universities. Riitta Holopainen, from the University's Bibliographic Information Services, presented the University's good practices in implementing equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives.
The visit strengthened international academic cooperation, supported the exchange of good practices within the YUFE Alliance, and contributed to the further internationalisation of research and teaching activities at Nicolaus Copernicus University.
