From 17 to 21 November 2025, the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Spatial Management at Nicolaus Copernicus University hosted two lecturers from the Earth Sciences and Environment Department of the University of Antananarivo (Madagascar):
Ibrahim Andriamandimby Souleman and Raymond Rakotondrazafy, who visited Toruń within the Erasmus+ KA107 programme.

During their stay, our guests delivered a series of lectures devoted to selected environmental and cultural issues of Madagascar, including:

  • the culture and tourism of Madagascar
  • an overview of the island’s main geological formations and natural resources
  • the geodiversity of the world’s fourth-largest island
  • environmental challenges related to small-scale artisanal gold mining in the Maevatanana region.

The visit was an important component of our Faculty’s international teaching cooperation and an excellent opportunity for students to broaden their knowledge of one of the world’s most environmentally diverse regions.

This semester, our Faculty is also hosting Anjatiana Rakotoarimalala, a PhD candidate from the University of Antananarivo, who is completing a semester-long internship supervised by Dr hab. M. Świtoniak and Dr hab. P. Charzyński. Her project focuses on soil erosion issues in Madagascar.

The aim of her internship is to develop skills in applying remote sensing and GIS tools in soil classification, in the analysis of lavaka phenomena, and in erosion modelling. Additionally, together with her supervisors, she is preparing an article based on bibliometric research on erosion in Madagascar.

Joint research and teaching activities with the University of Antananarivo represent an important element of the Faculty’s internationalisation efforts and contribute to strengthening cooperation with countries of the Global South.

We encourage you to watch the music video created by Ibrahim, promoting the protection of Madagascar’s geodiversity:
